About Overlay:

This gallery presents a variety of pictures on which a pattern, often geometric, has been superimposed, guiding the eye to see both the subject and the pattern in different ways. Sometimes the pattern appears in focus, sometimes the image behind, and sometimes both pattern and image interplay simultaneously or successively. The pictures seem to be a psychological or perceptual experiment as much as an artistic endeavour. They play with our way of seeing in often surprising ways, leading us to recognise how we see as much as what we see; and that what we see depends as much on us as the thing that is seen. Lillian’s last public presentation of her work was given in Oxford in 2017, with the title ‘Beauty will save the world’. According to this group of pictures, if beauty is to save the world, then both the eye and the mind of the beholder need to be affected.
